The IPC Irwin Ripple Tank includes all the equipment to demonstrate the basic principles of waves. The shallow tank itself incorporates sloped plastic surrounds and revolutionary wave dampers to produce clear wave patterns without interference wave reflections from the sides. Included with the Ripple Tank is IPC Irwin’s unique Ripple Tank Driver which provides both ‘Individual Vibration Motor and LED Strobe Light controls’ and a ‘Variable Freeze Wave’ function. The addition of our new higher output, low voltage (12VDC), LED Strobe Light allows the tank to be illuminated from the top so the light shines through the water enabling the wave patterns to be projected onto any white surface placed below the tank. These patterns are clearly visible, even without darkening the room. The Ripple Tank contains many addition parts to allow all the basic properties of waves to be demonstrated, including plain waves, reflection, refraction, interference and diffraction.
RIPPLE TANK DRIVER DESCRIPTION.
The front panel of the Driver Unit includes a ‘Function’ switch, a manual ‘Motor Speed’ control, and a manual ‘Strobe Light Flash Rate’ control. Four standard 4mm output sockets for the Motor and Strobe Light are located on the right-hand side of the unit, while the Power Input Socket (12VDC) is located on the left-hand side, a 12VDC Mains Supply Adapter is included with the Ripple Tank. The ‘Function’ switch modes operator as follows:- Off – no power supplied to the Motor or the Strobe Light. Freeze – the Driver Unit senses the Motor speed and sends a synchronised pulse to the Strobe Light which has the effect of freezing the ripples. The manual Motor Speed control is active in this mode, but the manual Strobe Light Flash Rate control is disabled. Manual – the user may adjust both the manual Motor Speed and manual Strobe Light Flash Rate to provide a frozen effect and may also slowly reverse or speed up the ripples as required. Continuous – the Strobe Light is powered continuously for steady illumination purposes only, the manual Motor Speed control is active, but the manual Strobe Light Flash Rate control is disabled.
RIPPLE TANK DRIVER INSTRUCTIONS.
First connect the white 4mm plugs on the Ripple Tank Motor to the blue 4mm sockets marked ‘Motor’ on the Driver Unit, the polarity is not important. Note: if the motor is not connected the strobe light will not illuminate in the ‘Freeze’ mode. Now connect the LED Strobe Light 4mm plugs to the 4mm sockets marked ‘LED Lamp’, note: polarity is important so connect red to red and black to black. Incorrect polarity will not cause damage, but the LED Strobe Light will not illuminate. See note above regarding Motor connection in ‘Freeze’ mode. Set the Function switch to the ‘Off’ position and the Motor Speed control fully anti-clockwise, ie. to the lowest setting. Plug the power lead from the Mains Supply Adapter into the socket marked ‘12VDC Power’, now plug the Mains Supply Adaptor into a mains socket and switch on if required. Switch the Driver Unit on by turning the Function switch to the ‘Freeze’ mode, then turn the manual Motor Speed control clockwise to the speed required. Adjust the position of the LED Strobe Light (darken the room if necessary) and you should now see the ripples produced by the vibrating Motor appear to be frozen in the water. Note: adjusting the ripple bar or dippers will enhance the effect. The ‘Freeze’ mode will operate over a wide range of motor speed settings, note: the manual LED Strobe Light Flash Rate control is disabled in this mode. Next set the Function switch to the ‘Manual’ mode and adjust both the manual Motor Speed and manual LED Strobe Light Flash Rate controls to freeze the ripples. Further careful adjustment will allow the ripples to move slowly forwards or backwards. For constant Strobe Light illumination set the Function switch to the ‘Continuous’ mode, note: only the manual Motor Speed control is adjustable in this mode.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS.
The Ripple Tank Driver Unit must be powered from the 12VDC Main Supply Adapter supplied with the product. Do NOT allow the Adapter to come into contact with water and do not use afterwards if it does – seek technical assistance. Please carefully read all the Instructions provided with the Ripple Tank itself to ensure safe use.
